CLARENCE  S. DARROW

July 23rd

Dear Paul

I gave [Hazetine ?] a written option to buy the stock for 132.00  a share.  This was raising his bid $25000?  He did not hesitate much.  All he said was that he was not sure he could raise the money, for that reason he wanted six weeks to do it.  I am satisfied he can raise it, and also satisfied that he is getting a good deal.  I think he is a mighty fine figure fellow & he has full confidence in you.
Baehr felt sure that it was worth all we asked and that you should get it.  He asked me what you would do if you sold out and I told him that I didnt know.  He said he didnt know whether he could offer you any thing good, but to tell you to come & see him.  I am inclined to think you can get something good if you xxx want it.  Still if you want to take two years off at Oxford I see no reason why you can and why I couldnt too.  Any how there is time enough to think of that[.]

I think that you wont need me, and unless you do I will probably start for Europe to be gone ten weeks or three months leaving here the 2d or 3rd of Aug.  If you think you might need me I am not anxious to go.  You can give the B & O Dividend to your mother.  I want her not to worry about any financial matters & she can of course have all the money she needs.  I xxx will write her Monday.  The Pa dividends you can keep until I return unless you or your mother wants it.  I [?] my Col Fuel at 86 ? sold it 88? .  Think I should have xxx held it longer but I thought I might put it out at a higher price.  I still have my Genl. Electric with a-stop order at 120.  May raise the order.  If I sell any more [?] [?] and leave shall put in a stop order.  I have the feeling that the whole market is too high[.]  Of course I will be very glad if the sale goes through, think you can have a better time here

and I know I can.  I am feeling very well these days, better than for a long time.  Your Mother wrote me about the Minnesota land that was given you.  I think that will be worth something some of these days.  I presume the time is up for culling off the timber.  If you will write to Hon Jaquish.  Duluth Minnesota.  I think his initials C. but am not sure.  I think Jacobs could find his name in Hubbels directory.  Any how if you write him he will see Sheldon [?] & get the dope for you[.]  Jaquish has been a good friend of mine for 30 years & will be glad to help you.  He was formerly U.S. Dist Atty for Minnesota.  I guess this will be a long enough letter by the time you start it.

I had [Hazetine ?] come to my office & sit in the room while I called you the last time, and told him just why I did it[.]
