Paul Dear?
I just mailed a letter to you? to catch the one Sunday P.M. mail? that your father wrote at the end of what I could tell was a day of worry and indecision about whether to go home? etc.? saying he will find out tomorrow about sailings and available accomodations? in case? ? I could see it was a longer letter than he usually writes? and he asked me to spell Max Epstein?s name for him as he put it onto the envelope and enclosed a note to him? inside the letter to you? explaining that

he was asking you to go for advice? if you will? but afraid you won?t? and afraid you won?t see things and do things as C. D. feels sure must? or? LIP? etc. I can?t help wondering what he said about going home?and everything? ; he has been so ill at ease since Saturday report? (received here Sunday?) and to my inquiries if any worse? said? ?Hell?yes? the situation is exactly as I?ve foreseen and foretold but I can?t make Paul believe it? or? I couldn?t? ; it?s too late, now, of course? excepting that it?ll be still worse unless I can get him to get rid of stuff and quit the damn game? without seeming to boss him too hard. I hate to have him feel that I?m doing that? but? JESUS he?s playing a risky hand and dangerous game?? (near as I can remember his exact language?)

Am sending this posthaste to follow his? to ask you to go see Mr. Epstein (if you have no reason for avoiding it), just to greatly gratify your father? if no other reason? On my own responsibility? let me say that Mr. E. some time ago induced your father to take on some Tank [?] stock? which soon after he sold? feeling that Mr. E. was a professional juggler of things? at that? and not to be acted on? , and advice from him to buy (or sell?) was apt to be inspired by benefit to himself & his crowd and their monopolies & manipulations?as I recall. Anyhow? when I suggested today that I?d better write to Marie & sort of prepare her for a possible earlier return, so she won?t be away visiting, perhaps? if he was telling you that we may go soon? he laid down his pen and said? ?Let that go? ; no hurry about stirring her up? and then having to change it again? and bother around? ; I?ll tell you in time to cable, if necessary.? So really, am wondering what present proposition is?or isn?t.? If you get any slant in letter just sent to you that seems suitable to ever lightly justify preparing Marie, please do so, for

there will be a lot to do about having books cleaned and all sorts of things being left til just before we retur?  that would be same as not done if done too soon? ; and I certainly don?t want all those upsetting dirty extras going on after we get there, and don?t want her to be down in Davenport or some other place if p?d?q word sent to you all.? I feel deeply disturbed for your sake if your father?s anxieties and unrest are to be taken at surface signs; but am hoping that a big part of it is due to being so far away,? so apprehensive for your future? fully as much as for his own side? ; he is much more easily worried than ever in earlier years, & more nervous; but fortunately I am managing to keep a tranquil, restful, satisfying (!) atmosphere and environment around us these days and months? (or? of course he wouldn?t stay away.)? He is half=promising various lecture=agents to fill engagements in March & later, perhaps? depending on health by time he gets to N.Y. arranging to see them there then? or let them know definitely soon after. I don?t dare say much against it? or about it? as he wants to foresee something coming in, I suppose; but hope he won?t? & won?t have to. I?d be worried to let him go alone? and know he wouldn?t take me? on act. of expense. If ever you feel the need of writing me? typewrite address & mark Personal? and it positively will not be even asked about
