Judge William Maxwell Conley

Judge Conley, a judge of the Superior Court, Madera County, presided over Clarence Darrow's second bribery trial. Judge Conley took much greater control over the proceedings than did Judge Hutton in the first trial. He took an active role in jury selection by limiting repetitive questions and speeding up the process. He was obviously aware of the acrimony that permeated the first trial and warned both sides to control their personal animosity.
