Hugh Reid Belknap

During the historic 1896 election, Governor John Peter Altgeld was running for re-election and he persuaded a reluctant Clarence Darrow to run for Congress. Darrow did not actively campaign for himself because it was thought the seat he was running for was safely Democratic. Instead he traveled to other districts to campaign for other Democratic candidates. But Altgeld lost the governorship and Darrow lost his race. The official vote was 22,075 votes for the Republican Hugh Reid Belknap and 21,485 votes for Darrow.
