DeWitt Clinton Cregier

DeWitt Clinton Cregier (1829 - 1918) served as the mayor of Chicago from 1889 to 1891. In 1889, Cregier saw Clarence Darrow give a speech on free trade and afterward he offered Darrow the position of Special Assessment Attorney for the city of Chicago. He told Darrow that he offered him the position because of his speech but Darrow found out later that John Peter Altgeld had asked Cregier to offer Darrow a position in the city government.
