Joseph Kahahawai

Joseph Kahahawai was a 20-year-old Native Hawaiian. He was one of five defendants in the Ala Moana rape case who were accused of kidnapping and raping Thalia Massie, the wife of Navy officer Thomas Massie. On January 8, 1932, Kahahawai was kidnapped by Thomas Massie, his mother-in-law Grace Fortescue and two navy enlisted men in an attempt to get him to confess to assault on Thalia. He was murdered soon after he was kidnapped. It was the murder of Joseph Kahahawai that brought Clarence Darrow to Hawaii.
