The Clarence Darrow Letters

D. C. Stephenson to Clarence Darrow, April 20, 1930

Image provided by the Indiana State Library. The reference at the bottom of the letter to the Evans Gangsters is to Hiram Wesley Evans (1881 - 1966) Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan from 1922 until 1939. Stephenson claimed he was framed by Evans for the murder of Madge Oberholtzer.

Hon. Clarence Darrow

1537 East 60th Street

Chicago, Illinois

My dear Mr. Darrow:

In my anxiety to overcome Klan propaganda, in my letter of April 18, and disabuse your mind of possible erroneous appraisal of the true situation regarding my imprisonment I neglected to give you some practical iformation, in this; The Prison Board of alleged Trustees meets here in April 24th and 25th. Those days will be crowded with visitors and curiosity seekers. Saturday, April 26, will be very much the same. Any other date will be better for a conference. This information is given for your convenicence. Any date is satisfactory to me.

A note is attached to this letter, addressed to the prison Warden, requesting that he please permit this letter to be mailed immediately. This a regular "writing day" and there is usually some delay ingettting out so many letters.

Yours truly,

D. C. Ste henson

P.S. No one in Indiana will oppose my release except the criminal faction of the Klan - about 12 -- in the state -- and a few organized crooks (professing high scruples) who profit by their alliance with the Evans Gangsters.
