Groundbreaking & Construction

On a cold February day in 1976, Dean Carl Auerbach, along with University of Minnesota Board of Regents Chairman Neil Sherburne, Attorney General Warren Spannaus, Minnesota Chief Justice Robert Sheran, and attorney Peter Dorsey broke ground on the new Law School building. The ceremony initiated a year of construction on a site located on the edge of the West Bank away from the bridge head, just as it had been pictured by Dean Lockhart and the faculty twelve years earlier. Progressing smoothly, the construction phase was spared any major delays or reversals of fortune. Even though work on some parts of the interior continued into early spring, the new Law School building welcomed students, faculty, and staff for the first day of classes in January 1978.
